Synchronizing directories

This tool is meant to make it easier for you to synchronize a local directory with a remote directory. This can be usefull, for example, for web sites. In order to use this tool you must first open the site that contains the directory you want to synchronize. This is due to the fact that the tool is site dependent.

Add a new directory to synchronize

To create a new synchronization go to the directory you want to synchronize on the remote server. Then select the menu option Synchronize->Synchronize current directory. You will now be asked to select the local directory to synchronize against. When this is done the synchronization tool will open.

Open an existing synchronization.

In the bottom of the Synchronize menu you will see all existing synchronizations for the current site. Just select one and the synchronization tool will open.

Working with the Synchronizing tool.

Once the synchronizing tool is opened and has finished loading the directories you will see that the view consist of two directory trees, your local directory to the left and the remote directory to the right. Some files are marked with different colors. These are the files that are different in the two directories. By default files that exists in both directories but are differnet are marked in red. Files that exist on the local filesystem but are missing on the remote are marked in green. Files that exist on the remote system but are missing on your local filesystem are marked in blue. These colors can be changed in the Configuring the Synchronizing tool dialog. Between these directory views there are four buttons. The two double arrrow buttons at the top let you do a complete synchronization. The first button from the top updates the remote directory with the local as reference. If the file/directory exist in the local directory it's copied to the remote, if it's missing in the local directory it will be deleted in the remote. Next button from the top work in the same way but it updates the local directory with the remote as reference. The next two single arrow buttons are disabled by default but will be enabled as soon as you select a file. The right arrow updates the selected remote file. If the selected file is missing in the local directory it will be deleted in the remote. The left button works in the same way but the other way around.

Configuring the Synchronizing tool.

To open this dialog select the menu option Settings->Configure Synchronize.... The first options let you select how the tool should compare files: by comparing their modification time or by comparing size and permissions. Next option let you set the time difference between the remote filesystem and your local filesystem. For example if you save the same file on both the remote and local filesystem at the same time ( don't ask me how ;-) ), and the remote file show the time 14:26 and the local 12:26 then set the time difference to +2. This way the files will not be marked as different even if the actual time stamp is different. In the color settings you can select the colors to display differences. You can then also set if you want the tool to warn before files/directories are deleted.
