Scan Settings

When you run AVScan for the first time, you should see the Scan Page as shown below (if not, then click on the Scan tab to get to this page).

You can enter the Scan Settings explicitly or create a Scan Item to store the Scan Settings for frequent use.

Virus Database Location

The Virus Database Location specifies which Virus Database to use while scanning for viruses.

To set the Virus Database Location, go to Database->Location... or click on the button.

The Virus Database can be either a file or a directory.

The default value is:

Note: The Virus Database Location setting is set independently from the Scan Items (see below) and is, therefore, not stored on each Scan Item.

Scanner Settings

The Scanner Settings specify the performance parameters for the AntiVirus Scanner (the library that scans each object).

Do not confuse this term, Scanner Settings, with Scan Settings.

To set the Scanner Settings go to Scan->Scanner Settings... or click on the button.

You should then see the dialog as shown below:

Creating Scan Items

Scan Items are used to conviently store Scan Settings for frequent use.

To create a new Scan Item, click on the Add... button. You should then see the dialog as shown below.

Enter the new Scan Settings and then click on Set.

Whenever you want to use your new Scan Item just select it from the Scan List and its values will automatically be entered into the Scan Settings.

Start Scan

Once you have specified the:

  1. Scan Settings
  2. Virus Database Location
  3. Scanner Settings

You can begin the virus scan.

To start the virus scan, click on the Start button.

Drag & Drop Scan

You can also scan any object instantly by dragging it from another application and dropping it on to the scanner icon (shown on the right).

Remember that you need to set the Virus Database Location and the Scanner Settings before each scan, including drag & drop scans.

Scan Results

Immediately after you start the scan the Results Page should appear (as shown below) and any objects found to have viruses or problems will be listed on the Results list.

A dialog will appear after the scan to report the results of the scan.

It is recommended that you recycle any objects that have been found to be infected by viruses. To recycle an object, select the object on the Results List and then click on the Recycle button.

Never attempt to view or run an object that has been found to have a virus.

You can save the results to a log file by going to Results->Save As...
