The Virus Database location can be either a file or a directory.

It is important to have an up to date Virus Database since new viruses are often discovered and reported on a daily basis.
The files in the Virus Database directory contain information on virus patterns. Updated versions of these Virus Database files can be obtained from a number of sources.
If you obtained the Virus Database files and have them locally then you can simply copy them to the Virus Database directory. Otherwise it is recommended that you update the Virus Database from the Internet.
To update the Virus Database from the Internet you need to have
the virus database update program freshclam
set up properly
(particulary its permissions if you are not planning to run
AVScan as the root user).
If (and only if) you want to update the Virus Database from the
Internet without running AVScan as the root user then you need to
set up freshclam
as follows:
su
chmod +s /usr/bin/freshclam
chown clamav.clamav /usr/bin/freshclam
chown -R clamav.clamav /usr/share/clamav
exit
If the above operations were performed successfully then at this point you can run AVScan as any user to update the Virus Database from the Internet.
To update the Virus Database from the Internet go to
Database->Update From Internet. freshclam
will be
called to update the Virus Database from the Internet.
